Massacre at Belo Horizonte

FIFA

There was utter carnage in Brazil today after the first semi-final of the FIFA World Cup.

In the Estadio Mineirao at Belo Horizonte, the host nation of the FIFA World Cup, Brazil was soundly defeated by Germany, 7 goals to 1.

Yes, you read that correctly, 7-1.

It appeared that Brazil would not score, but in the 90th minute a consolation goal was scored by Oscar. This was too little, too late. Brazil was totally humiliated by the German onslaught that showed no sign of abating until the final whistle.

Goal scorers for Germany were Kroos (2), Klose, Muller, Schurrle (2) and Khedira.

Germany is the first team into the World Cup final and will play the winner of the Nederlands-Argentina game to be played on 9/07/2014 at 17:00 (local time).

Brazil has one more game in the competition when they play the loser of the above match to determine 3rd place in the Cup. Perhaps some lost pride can be restored by doing well in this match.

Nobody described the grief felt by the players and the nation better than defeated player, Fred.

“It is a moment of great sadness and disappointment”, he said. “It is a scar that will forever live in all our lives, but will have to seek a higher power to pass such adversity.”

Here’s how Warren from Sydney’s Daily Telegraph recorded the event:

Rolf Harris’ Sentence Unjustly Lenient

Rolf Harris

Rolf Harris

The recent sentence of five years and nine moths handed down to veteran performer Rolf Harris is grossly inadequate. Consider that each of the 12 offences carried at maximum 2 year prison sentence, Harris was looking at a possible 24 years imprisonment.

Legal opinion believed that because of the nature of the crime some of which if committed today could attract a life sentence, that the sentence Harris could expect would be 8 to 10 years, and he could be expected to die in gaol.

Harris’ 12 guilty verdicts of sexual assault against children, committed over decades, which sent some of his victims into a spiral of alcoholism, depression and self-hatred, resulted in the final sentence of five years and nine months. Consider further that Harris brazenly carried out these attacks, often in plain sight of others, and using his position of fame and stardom to protect himself, and that he has shown no remorse whatsoever.

Harris’ sentence of five years and nine months was arrived at after a convoluted formula of consecutive and concurrent sentences for the 12 offences.

Further, UK law allows prisoners who serve 12 months or more to be released on licence half-way through their sentence. This Harris could be released as early as May 2017.

The sentence is set to be reviewed amid criticisms it is unjustly lenient.

Flying on Friday the 13th?

Would you board a flight listed on the departures board as Finnair Flight 666 to HEL on Friday the 13th?

Finnair AY666 Copenhavn to Helsinki

Finnair AY666 Copenhavn to Helsinki

That’s what travellers faced when flying from Copenhavn to Helsinki last September and December (2013) and again in June this year (2014). Friday the 13th and the number 13 is considered bad luck in many Western countries, 666 is considered the devil’s number, so this flight was three times damned, or was it?

Finnair flies AY666 with an Airbus A320 on this route daily.

To ease passenger concerns airlines such as Scandinavian Airlines, Continental, Air France, British Airways and KLM do ont have an aisle 13 on their aircraft, so is this due to superstition? Whereas Finnair and other regional carriers like Norwegian and Estonian Air keep row 13.

BTW, Flight 666 to HEL on Friday 13th touched down in Helsinki without event.

Rolf Harris

Rolf Harris

84 year old veteran performer Rolf Harris has been found guilty on all 12 counts of sexual assault. As the verdict was read out in the Southwark Crown Court, there was a stunned silence as the performer’s 60 year show business career collapsed around him.  However those in court who had been following the case must have expected the verdict.  He was pilloried on the front page of every UK daily newspaper, and likewise around the world and especially in Australia.

Gone was the happy, eccentric, talented singer and artist, and all that was left was the convicted paedophile and sexual predator. The judge has stated that a custodial sentence is inevitable, and the public have every right to demand and expect it! Each offence carries a 2 year sentence, although it is unlikely that Harris will serve 24 years for his crimes.  He is more likely to serve 8-10 years, which means he could still die in gaol.

Organisations in which he has been involved are scurrying to remove him from their history.  He has been stripped of his BAFTA fellowship. His Order of Australia is likely to be removed, and so too his MBE and CBE. Footpath plaques in Perth and Newcastle are likely to be removed.  Harris will be made a nobody. Sydney’s Madame Tussauds has already removed his wax figure, doing so last May.

In court Harris lied about his relationships with his victims, and tried to make them out as liars, but in the end with skillful cross-examination by barrister Sasha Wass QC, Harris was undone and made admissions that sealed his fate.  As a result of this trial, more victims has come forward to relay their stories to police.  Some offences ocurred here in Australia or in other countries so therefore could not be heard as they occurred outside UK jurisdiction.

Harris will be sentenced on Friday, and will then be conveyed to London’s Wandsworth Prison to  commence his sentence.  From there he is likely to moved to Littlehey Prison in Cambridgeshire which a minimum security facility for those who are at risk in open prison but considered a low escape risk.

After 60 years of lies, deceit and sexual molestation, Rolf Harris will receive the only sentence that is long overdue for him.  Life imprisonment.  Even so, this is cold comfort for the abuse his victims have had to endure over time.

Here’s how Australian cartoonists recorded the conviction.

Harris’ $20 million fortune is likely to be eroded significantly to pay for his legal bills and as a result of civil actions from his victims and they seek compensation for his attacks on them.

A Dehavilland DHC-1 Chipmunk (VH-UPD) crashed in flight shortly after take-off near Coffs Harbour (YSCH) airport yesterday (29/06/2014).

The aircraft, built in 1950, was extensively damaged in the crash and appears to be beyond economic repair.

The pilot received serious injuries and was taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital.  The co-pilot/passenger received minor injuries in the crash.

The Chipmunk first registered as WB659 and saw service as a trainer in the RAF, then came to Australia and was initially registered as VH-BAD.

He’s a real trooper?

I often heard this saying used when referring to members of the theatrical industry, “He’s a real trooper!”  As my maternal grandmother appeared on stage in London vaudeville times, I believed that the saying should be, “He’s a real trouper!”

Which is correct?

To many English speakers, a trooper is a policeman or soldier. In the U.S., many state police forces refer to their members as troopers.

A trouper is the member of an acting group called a troupe.

The words troop and troupe both entered English from the same French word:

Troop: 1540s,”body of soldiers,” from the French troupe.

Troupe: 1825, “company, band or ensemble,” from the French troupe.

The Oxford English Dictionary gives these definitions of the colloquial uses:

Trooper: A brave or stalwart person.

Trouper: A reliable, uncomplaining person; a staunch supporter or colleague.

Therefore, if the context has to do with courage, trooper is appropriate. If the context has to do with cooperation, dependability, acting and the show business attitude of “the show must go on,” then trouper is the correct word to use.

I thought this layout was absolutely outstanding, and the cost to build it was was $4.8 million. Too much money and too much spare time, but what an outcome!  😛

Queen Olympias – Mother of Alexander The Great

An interesting review of Queen Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great (Aleksander Veleki)

Olympias (c.375-316): Epirote princess, married to the Macedonian king Philip II, and mother of Alexander the Great.

The girl who was later to be called Olympias was the daughter of Neoptolemus, the king of the Molossians, one of the greatest tribes in Epirus. They lived in the neighborhood of modern Ioannina in Greece. During Neoptolemus’ reign, the tribe became more sedentary; urbanization started and we hear about scribes and other administrative officials. In 358, the Molossians became the allies of the Macedonian king Philip II (360-336); the alliance was strengthened by a diplomatic marriage. In 357, Olympias became Philip’s wife.

Next year, a chariot that Philip had sent to the Olympic games, was victorious. Therefore, the queen received the name Olympias. In the same summer, she gave birth to her first child: Alexander. According to the Greek author Plutarch of Chaeronea (46-c.122), these events took place on the same day…

MH370 – and its Influence on Conspiracy Theory

In Italy, the word dietrologia, literally “behindology”, expresses the idea of a search for hidden secrets, and the exposure of secret plots. The main characters are usually the Mafia, politicians, the church and wealthy industrialists. This is a predictable Dan Brown cast, with motives that can be guessed and credible reasons for concealing their powers.

The fog of conspiracies around the still-unaccounted-for flight MH370 are a good example of behindology too, and also involve a set of actors who most people agree can’t be trusted. The theories are still coming thick and fast: a new book has claimed the plane was shot down during a joint Thai-US military training exercise, and Malaysia’s long-serving former prime minister Matahir Mohamad hinted at a CIA cover up.

These theories add to longer established conspiracies such as the idea that MH370 landed at the RAF Diego Garcia base, or was shot down by the North Koreans. Unless the plane is definitely found – and perhaps even if it is – MH370’s whereabouts seems set to join the likes of Princess Diana’s death or the moon landings in the canon of never-ending conspiracy theories.

But before we dismiss the MH370 conspiracists as mad or sad, consider what they tell us about who most people assume to be the bad guys.

Area 51, JFK and the moon landings

Frederic Jameson, the US cultural critic, has described conspiracy theory as “the poor person’s cognitive mapping”. It is, he says, an attempt to explain events by invoking a litany of the powers and interests that are popularly believed to run the world for their own benefit. Conspiracy accounts of what really happened at Area 51, the killing of JFK, the faked moon landings, and many others suggest that the world really is organised by secret agencies of various kinds. If “we” look carefully enough at the evidence then “they” will be exposed, and their plans will shrivel in the light of day.

Looking at the actors in the conspiracies about the Malaysia Airlines flight, we see a similar pattern. Many involve various military powers and indeed the idea that governments – Malaysian, Chinese, US – are not telling the world what they know is common to all the big post-World War II conspiracies. In an era when Snowden, Assange, Manning and others are showing us just how much data states can harvest it would be prudent to assume that there is information about passengers, technology or the flight plan which has not been released to a greedy media.

This is another way of saying that conspiracy theorists are not necessarily mad at all, but rather that they often deploy forms of explanation that investigative journalists, social movements and even critical social scientists would be happy to claim as their own.

For example, one of the MH370 stories began with the fact that there were 20 employees from the Texas-based company Freescale Semiconductor on board. Freescale manufactures chips for electronic equipment, including kit for cell phones, which could be used to disable other electronic networks. So it’s not a huge leap to suggest that the plane could have been electronically cloaked, which might account for the some of the difficulties that “the authorities” have had in tracking it.

Consider the logic of this story. We know that the US military is keen on developing weapons to wage electronic warfare and that it will not be advertising the nature of these technologies. That motive in itself is enough to build a series of explanations involving the US protecting its knowledge, the Chinese (or anyone else) trying to find out what the US is up to and Freescale testing secret equipment, or even deliberately killing four employees who have patent rights over the technology.

Impossible or improbable?

All of these are credible accounts, in the sense that they do not invoke any non-human agents and stick with money and power as motives. I’m not saying this is what has happened, but it is something that could have happened, and as Sherlock Holmes tells us “when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth”.

To call someone a conspiracy theorist is to suggest that they seek causes which are implausible when simpler explanations will do. Perhaps, but if Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein had believed what they were told the then US president, Richard Nixon, would never have been impeached. The point is that conspiracies don’t need to involve aliens, or the Illuminati, or the Holy Grail, because they can easily use forms of forensic common sense to reach some remarkable conclusions.

The asking of questions is not in itself pathological, and it’s a fine line between a scientific scepticism that begins with doubt and a form of paranoia which assumes that the world is deceiving us. Just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean that they’re not out to get you.

Sensible scepticism

The tragedy of MH370 does demand explanation, and for the grieving, such a need is a pressing personal issue. For many others, the diagnosis of cause will involve a set of characters who are unified only by the lack of trust that most people have in the intentions of the powerful.

Big corporations, the military/industrial complex and the state play such an important part in these theories because we know that they actually do try to organise the world in a way that benefits them, and this often means hiding things from us. This is a generally accepted truth which is embedded in dietrologic, and conspiracy thinking merely begins with a sensible scepticism about what we are told. And scepticism, in science as in politics, is always a form of behindology.
